Beach volleyball gave us welcome news over the weekend: Cuba won the gold medal at the second stop of the Norceca circuit, beating the United States by two sets to one on the sands of Varadero. The unusual thing is that duo B was crowned, not the one made up of Noslen Díaz from Artemisa and Jorge Luis Alayo from Villa Clara.

Both advanced to the semifinals after leaving their opponents on the road. Already in that instance, by regulation, the Cuban pairings had to face each other; then the surprise happened. His compatriots emerged! The success was achieved by 21-14 and 21-18.

For Lázaro Portes and Daniel Martínez it was only their second international foray, which confirms what they experienced weeks ago, when they won the silver medal at the V ALBA Games, based in Venezuela.

Martínez is 2.17 meters tall and is a promising volleyball player, with an advantage for working on the net and increasingly paired with Portes. So they completed the job, defeating the experienced American duo of Troy Field-Tucker Silila, 21-18, 19-21 and 15-12 in the decisive tie break.

The main Cuban couple and trump card for the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023, that of Díaz and Alayo, obtained the bronze at the expense of the Mexicans Jorge Barajas and Gabriel Cruz, by 21-16 and 21-18, in just 36 minutes.

This second stop of the beach volleyball circuit of the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (Norceca), awards points for the regional ranking towards the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023.
