The resurgence of the strategic importance of the GIUK Gap.- Gonzalo Vázquez Orbaiceta

In the last decade, the progressive militarization of Russia in the Arctic and the increasing activity of its Navy, together with the changing geography of the high north, have caused the maritime region between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom (known as the GIUK Gap ) has been recovering the strategic importance it had during the Cold War. Russia’s emphasis on better control of the seas around it, embodied in its latest maritime doctrine, has highlighted the importance for the Atlantic Alliance of strengthening its collective defense and early warning systems on the northern flank, including the GIUK Gap. . As the portal between the two oceans, and the only entrance to the Arctic other than the Bering Strait, the emerging activity in the region and the tensions with Moscow make it imperative for NATO to have an adequate defense in the Gap, providing an adequate surveillance capacity to the growing military activity in the region.
