Covid, infections and deaths are decreasing in the world: WHO data

Quasi 2.6 million new Covid infections and over 17,000 deaths have been recorded worldwide in the last 28 days, from April 17 to May 14, 2023, data down by 14% and 26% respectively compared to the previous 28 days (from March 20 to April 16). Therefore, the descent of Covid continues globally, also certified by the last one Weekly update from the World Health Organization (WHO). However, if we focus on the various WHO regions, the situation “is mixed – notes the UN health agency – with increases in cases reported in the regions of Southeast Asia (+52%) and the western Pacific”. In terms of deaths, a significant increase emerges again in the Southeast Asian area (+153%).

With regard to the WHO European Region, the decrease in new cases of Covid is 41% compared to the previous 28 days, for a total of over 687 thousand infections in the last 28 days. While deaths at 28 days drop by 43%, for a total of 5,814 reported. Six countries (10%) out of 61 for which data are available reported increases in cases above 20% (including Sweden, +38%). The highest number of new infections was reported by France (150,334, -31%), Russia (133,039; -49%), and Italy (82,452, -7%). In all these countries, however, there is a decline. France is also the country with the highest number of Covid deaths in the last 28 days (925; +31%). Followed by Russia (882 new deaths; -11%) and Italy (640, -1%), both countries with declining figures, according to the latest WHO update.

Also considering the other regions of the world, new cases decreased or remained stable in four out of six areas: in addition to the European region, the figure is decreasing in the Eastern Mediterranean region (-42%), in the Americas (-34%) and is practically stable in the African Region ( +2%). The number of deaths in the last 28 days has decreased in five out of six regions: in addition to Europe, the number of deaths decreases in the Eastern Mediterranean (-42%), in the Americas (-17%), in the Western Pacific (-14% ) and in the African region (-5%). Worldwide, the countries that have had the highest number of cases in the last 28 days are: South Korea (418,960, +46%), United States (355,376 new cases; -34%), Japan (229,877; +15%) , India (162,559; +32%) and Brazil (153,829; -28%). While they have the highest figure in deaths: United States (-22%), Brazil (+11%), France, Russia and India (+110%). From the beginning of the pandemic to May 14, 2023, more than 766 million cases and more than 6.9 million deaths from Covid have been reported globally.
