The actor and the relationship with the great director, which continued until his death: «We exchanged everything. When he passed away, the world collapsed on me”

«I will always remain the widow of Visconti».

In an interview four years ago with «La Stampa», Helmut Berger, who died today at 78, had explained – once and for all – how much his bond with the great Italian director – who had made him a star all over the world – was able to survive everything, even death. So much so that more than forty years after the filmmaker’s death, his name was still inextricably linked to him.

«He was an unforgettable man. We have been together for many years, we have exchanged everything. When he died, the world collapsed on me,” he added.

The meeting between the two

The meeting between the two took place in 1964, during the filming of the film “Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa…”. He, a model of rare beauty who wanted to start a career in cinema, met the master: it was the turning point in his professional life, of course.

But it was above all the upheaval of his personal life because that was also the meeting with the great loveso much so that the two remained united until the director’s death.

Visconti directed him and he imposed himself as a disruptive face. For his beauty, of course. But also for the naturalness with which he talked about his life, his sexual orientation, at a time when no one did.

The great success therefore came with “The Fall of the Gods”, a 1969 film, dealing with a difficult role, a character in the throes of his neuroses. Just as not simple was his Ludwig II of Bavaria in the film “Ludwig” (1973).

The artistic partnership

The one between the actor soon defined «the most beautiful man in the world» and the director was a happy partnershipfrom every point of view. So that after Visconti’s death, Berger entered a deep depression.

Together, they had shaped a trilogy, consisting of «The Fall of the Gods» (1969), «Ludwig» (1973) and «Family Group in an Interior» (1974). All films by Visconti in which Berger was acclaimed protagonist.

But theirs also remains a great love story, defined by them as such when few would have done so, preferring omissions or beating about the bush. Not them, bound to the end, even beyond death.
