Chennai: The Madras High Court has quashed an order of the Tamil Nadu Land Administration Commission declaring the land at Chengalpet near Chennai, owned by actors Mammootty and his son Dulquer Salman, as protected forest land. Mammootty and Dulquar own 40 acres of land at Karupazhippallam in Chengalpet.

The land was purchased in 1997 from Kapali Pillai. It was declared a protected forest land by the Land Administration in 2007. In the same year, Mammootty had obtained a favorable judgment from the Madras High Court against the order.

However, Mammootty approached the High Court again in May 2020 after the Commissioner of Land Administration began removing him to voluntarily reconsider the High Court order and seize the land.

When the petition was considered in August this year, the Madras High Court directed the Commissioner of Land Administration to stay the land acquisition process.

When the petition came up for reconsideration on Tuesday, Justice Ilanthirian ordered the complete reversal of the Land Administration’s order. When the case was heard on Tuesday, the public prosecutor defended the action of the Land Administration. The lawyer who appeared for Mammootty and Dulquar also argued that Mammootty and Dulquar had bought private land. The argument lasted a long time. The order of the Justice Land Administration was subsequently quashed. However, the court said that the commissioner of land administration could issue a new order within 12 weeks after hearing the explanations of Mammootty and Dulquar.
