Yet another scandal for Fugini. This time, fungus and parasite eggs were found in its popular tomato sauce, after an inspection carried out by the Instituto-Geral de Perícias (IGP). The case occurred in Viamão, metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS).

The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul subpoenaed the company, which had faced similar problems before. The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of the brand’s products in March this year, but the decision was suspended in April.

Fugini is also being investigated by the Civil Police on suspicion of a crime against consumer relations. The company said it did not have access to the report related to the case. The Civil Police investigation is expected to be completed in May, and those responsible for the company will be summoned to give testimony.

Delegate Jeiselaure de Souza stated that the result of the inspection proves the contamination of the sauces by fungus and parasite eggs, which makes the food unsuitable for human consumption. This is because they may be associated with harmful bacteria and toxins.

Three samples of tomato sauce were analyzed, including different markets, batches and presentations, and all showed the same fungal contamination and parasite eggs.

Fugini is a well-known company in the food sector, with 27 years of experience in the market. In your usethe company clarifies that it started to adopt a policy of sustainability and more natural labels, reducing the use of artificial preservatives and some ingredients such as sugar, salt and fat.

The company points out that the transition to more natural products, combined with “the population’s lack of technical knowledge, has generated unfounded rumours”. Fugini also said that the process of production, filling and closing of packages is automated, but imperceptible damage can occur during transport or handling, allowing contact with microorganisms that cause mold.

In any case, Anvisa had previously prohibited the manufacture, sale, distribution and use of all Fugini foods, due to serious failures in good manufacturing practices related to hygiene, quality control, safety of raw materials, control of pests and traceability, among other aspects. The company specializes in the production of tomato sauces, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, straw potatoes and canned vegetables.
