Ankara. Weeks before the Turkish Presidential and Parliamentary Elections on food pricesIs Europe jealous of Turkey?” The controversy flared up again.

While basic food prices in Turkey have tripled, Turkey has now become much more expensive than Europe, especially Germany. This situation also affected the Europeans who came to Turkey. Until the end of last year, shoppers from Turkey could neither go nor come close to the prices, although they were paid in Euros and earned an average of three times more than a Turk. “Number of people who say they will go to Turkey and shop” also decreased.

According to the news of Ali Gülen from Sözcü Newspaper, it is not possible to export baklava from Turkey to Germany anymore. At this rate, expats will take baklava from Germany to Turkey in the summer. Expatriates, who have brought especially pastrami, sausage, chocolate and raki, have started to take more meat products since last summer.

Sözcü newspaper made a price comparison under the heading “Here are the prices in Europe”:

While a kilogram of pistachios costs 700 TL in Turkey, prices vary between 15.80 Euros and 20 Euros (approximately 400 TL) in Germany.

In Germany, the weight of onions is between 0.69 cents and 1 Euro (approximately 20 TL).

Potatoes are sold for around 1 Euro, while canned okra costs 4.98 Euros per kilo. Fresh is cheaper. It is possible to buy 1 kilo of okra for 3-4 Euros from Turkish grocery stores.

Likewise, the prices of butter and oil decreased rapidly and 250 grams of butter decreased to 1.30 Euros. Similarly, prices for milk and dairy products continue to fall.

While the cost of banana is around 1 Euro, the price of tomato and zucchini is also 1 Euro.

The same problem is in question not only in food and beverage, but also in products such as clothing and books.

A book bought from Turkey for 400-600 TL means about 30 Euros for a German person. This negatively affects sales and the export of books to Germany.

Contrary to Turkey, inflation is falling in Europe

The European Central Bank increased interest rates by 1-2 percentage points and inflation began to decline rapidly. Gasoline prices are back to before the Russia-Ukraine war. It’s going down as well. Inflation is estimated to be 2.4 percent at most next year.
