Users of some of SanDisk’s most powerful SSDs have been facing very serious problems: the 4TB and 2TB Extreme and Extreme Pro line drives are deleting files instead of storing them. The company acknowledged the flaw and promised that it will release a fix for the devices.

Reports of the failure have spread in recent months to places like Reddit, Twitter, and even SanDisk’s own forums. Users claim that SSDs are erasing data stored on them and, in extreme cases, even stopping working.

The flaw seems to hit models manufactured in late 2022 and is more present in 4TB SSDs than in 2TB models – although these also have some flaws, according to reports.

SanDisk says it is already preparing a fix

In a statement released on Friday (19), Western Digital (the company that controls the SanDisk brand) said that the flaw was discovered months ago and that the first fix for the 4TB models is about to be released.

“Western Digital is aware of reports indicating that some users have experienced issues with SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro 4TB Portable SSDs,” the statement reads. “We have now resolved the issue and will post a firmware update on our website shortly. Customers with questions or who are experiencing issues should contact our support for assistance.”

The company didn’t say when exactly the fix will be released, nor if the 2TB models will also receive patches in the future.
