Mount Etna erupts and spews flames in the eastern Sicilian city of Rome, Italy.

Ash from the fire spread to the runway of a nearby airport. As a result, flights serving Catania were canceled yesterday.

The 3,330-meter (10,925-foot) volcano erupts several times a year, spewing ash onto the Mediterranean island. The last major volcanic eruption was in 1992.

Due to this situation, flights to and from the popular tourist destination of Catania will be canceled until safety conditions are guaranteed, the airport management said on Twitter.
