INTERVIEW – For the D^r Louise Luan, the APNs, which make it possible to “ensure part of the follow-up currently done by doctors”, represent a solution “to be combined with others”.

Public health physician, the D^r Louise Luan is co-author of the publication “Advanced Practice Nurse in Primary Care : the difficult construction of a profession with a fragile exercise.” (Irdes).

LE FIGARO. – Why the role of advanced practice nurses does not appear consensual?

Louise LUAN. – Depending on the actors, the definitions of the work and the place of IPAs are not the same. The public authorities present them as a solution to increase the supply of care. The nurses, who campaigned for the creation of the profession, see it as an opportunity to diversify the exercise of a profession which does not offer many possibilities for career development, especially in town, and to obtain more ‘autonomy. But for a number of GPs, the APN should practice primarily within the framework of delegation of tasks, which means that the doctor remains solely responsible.
