The Ministry of Health informed the Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva this morning (Wednesday) that the man who fell ill in Korona and died yesterday – contracted the Delta strain and not the Omicron. The hospital said that “after receiving a final answer from the lab, the suspicion of omicron disease in the deceased was ruled out. The deceased was verified to Delta.”

Yesterday, the man in his sixties was reported to be the first deceased in Israel to contract the Omicron strain. However, it was noted that most of his illness was not due to the corona – but to other background diseases.

The man, who suffered from severe and multiple background illnesses, was hospitalized in the Corona ward about two weeks ago in critical condition. In Soroka they said that most of his illness was due to background diseases and not pneumonia as a result of the corona.

The initial PCR test raised suspicion of the presence of the omicron, so the tests were sent for genetic flooring. A positive response to the identification of the Omicron variant was received yesterday afternoon, after his death. However, the final answer received this morning as stated ruled out that it was an infection with Omicron.
