Groups of students from different educational stages and the general public have learned about the research, conservation and dissemination work that has been carried out in the scientific institution for 25 years.

Given the high demand for visits, the Foundation will promote similar activities before the end of the year.

650 people have participated, between May 15 and 20, in the Open Days organized by the Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel-Dinópolis Foundation (Aragonese Museum of Paleontology) in order to celebrate International Museum Day and the 25th Anniversary of the institution.

According to him managing director of the Dinópolis Foundation, Alberto Cobos “From the Foundation team we wanted to transmit the journey of a fossil from its arrival at the laboratory, after the paleontological excavation, until it is exhibited in the paleontological museum in Dinópolis and becomes part of the collections of the Aragonese Museum of Paleontology. To this end, those attending the conferences have discovered, with the help of the Foundation’s own scientific team, the entrails of our facilities (office, library, laboratories and collections) and have learned about some of the most outstanding milestones that we have carried out during this quarter of a century, as well as unpublished fossils that have not yet been scientifically disclosed. Sometimes this long process is unknown, but it is fundamental in a project like Dinópolis and in all those in which the Foundation participates in favor of science and territorial development”.

Given the success of the sessions and the high demand for visits on the waiting list, the Foundation will promote similar activities before the end of the year.

College Team Visits

Likewise, and apart from these conferences, it is also necessary to highlight the interest that various national and international university groups have had in learning about the work of the Foundation and its facilities. Thus, so far this year, the Foundation has received visits from students of the Master’s Degree in Advanced Paleontology (Complutense University of Madrid and University of Alcalá de Henares), of the Master’s Degree in Protected Areas, Natural Resources and Biodiversity (University of Murcia ) and 27 students and professors of the degree in Paleontology and Evolution from the University of Bristol (United Kingdom).

25 YEARS EXCAVATING, PRESERVING, RESEARCHING AND DISSEMINATING THE PALEONTOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF THE PROVINCE OF TERUEL

The Teruel-Dinópolis Paleontological Joint Foundation is an institution of the Government of Aragon established in 1998 by the Aragonese Development Institute. One of its objectives is to promote the socioeconomic development of the province through the use of its paleontological resources, mainly through Dinópolis, but also through other initiatives that deal with the history of life on Earth.

The Foundation, chaired by the Department of Education, Culture and Sport and recognized as Aragonese Museum of Paleontology and as an agent of the Aragonese R+D+i System, it is focused on investigating, conserving and disseminating paleontological heritage. The scientific contributions go beyond Teruel’s paleontological heritage, since outstanding achievements have been made with fossils from other sources. Some 60,000 fossils are deposited in the Museum’s collections. More than half have been excavated by the institution’s own team and come from the hundreds of new deposits discovered in Teruel in these 25 years of activity.
