FIGARO DEMAIN – In the Hérault, the species is threatened by the drought which deprives the animals of their food.
Massif of Caroux-Espinouse (Hérault)
She has an eye. “To be!”, says Mélanie Larue, technician from the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB), pointing to the mouflon in the distance. It’s a female. Behind his telescope, we enjoy watching the animal grazing quietly, without suspecting the least in the world that he has admirers, reduced to silence by this enchanting spectacle and the fear of scaring him away. A few meters further, another female. Two lambs frolic at his side, soon joined by a third; they play and hop cheerfully, before disappearing behind a rock. Scene of daily life in the heart of the Caroux-Espinouse massif, a high place for observing mouflons in the Hérault. We are in the hamlet of Douch, in the town of Rosis, the Mecca of this emblematic site which attracts many tourists. On these foothills of the Cévennes a herd estimated at 3,000 head flourishes peacefully.
It is the oldest site in the world of study…
