Mumbai: The IPL Mega Auction is reportedly set to take place in Bengaluru on February 7 and 8. It is reported that this will be the last mega star auction to be held in the IPL and the current teams are opposed to the mega star auction which is allowed to retain very few players.

If the Kovid situation does not worsen, the mega star auction of the IPL will be held on February 7 and 8 in Bengaluru. The PTI quoted a senior BCCI official as saying that preparations for the event were progressing. Earlier, it was reported that the mega star auction would be held in the UAE, but now the BCCI has decided to hold it in India.

With the arrival of two new teams in the IPL this time around, the mega star auction has become a necessity. The Lucknow-based team, owned by Sanjeev Goenka, and the Ahmedabad-based team under the CVC Group are the newcomers to the IPL.

The BCCI had earlier said that both the teams would have to select three players from each of the three players in the auction before Christmas, but the deadline has been extended. At the same time, there are reports that the BCCI is considering abandoning the mega star auction itself as the current teams are opposed to holding a mega star auction every three years.

Current teams complain that every mega star auction breaks the team’s balance. Earlier, Delhi team owner Parth Jindal had said that it would be difficult to release key players after building a team with hard work. Jindal said it was very difficult to put Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan and Ashwin up for auction and it was unacceptable for young players to play for the country after being brought up and then lose them.
