Orbán in Qatar
On Monday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was the official state guest of Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar.
At Doha Airport on Sunday afternoon, the Gulf State’s Trade Minister welcomed the Hungarian delegation, which also included Finance Minister Mihály Varga and Economy Minister Márton Nagy. On Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was personally received by the Sheikh with military honours. Orbán later gave a speech at an economic forum in Doha at the Emir’s invitation.
According to information from the Prime Minister’s press office, the bilateral talks revolved around general economic relations and increased cooperation in the areas of energy and finance. Hungary is also looking in the Arab world for opportunities to strengthen its energy security. After moving away from Russian gas, Europe discovered Qatar in particular as a supplier of liquid gas. Hungary will also order LNG supplies from Qatar in the future, as it is always an advantage to have more than one foot, Orbán said in a social media post. In addition, opportunities for investments in other sectors of the economy were explored, such as the expansion of infrastructure and airports as well as agricultural exports.
But Orbán also campaigned for the peace position that Hungary is taking in the Ukraine conflict. Qatar is part of the global peace camp that is pushing for the conflict to be resolved as soon as possible. The Gulf state is also happy to offer itself as a mediator between the conflicting parties.
