First modification:

One of the challenges of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games is to guarantee the safety of the hundreds of thousands of people who will attend this first ceremony in the history of the Olympics in an open space on the banks of the Seine.

During the presentation of the security protocol for the Olympic Games, on Tuesday, May 23, the French Minister of the Interior and the organizers stated that security will be maximum during this ceremony.

On July 26, 2024, at 8:24 p.m. sharp, dozens of boats will begin a slow descent of the Seine between the Parisian monuments. On the banks of the Seine, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of spectators will be present.

“This format of opening ceremony in the city with an exceptional device is unprecedented,” explained Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024. “So an exceptional security device is being put in place,” he added.

“Good and bad” drones

On the night of the opening ceremony, no less than 35,000 police officers will be mobilized. And special attention will be paid to drones.

“The arrival of drones in civilian theaters of operations, as they already exist in the military, loaded with explosives for example, is obviously something new for us,” explained Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior.

“There were attempted attacks in Spain a few months ago, which makes us think that this type of event can give rise to this type of attack. There are good and bad drones, as the philosophers would say. So we have to get the good drones flying and stop the bad ones,” he said.

The police are already training to neutralize enemy drones. An additional 400 cameras will be installed along the Seine in Paris.

Darmanin did not specify the cost of security for the opening ceremony, but said that, in total, for the Interior Ministry, the cost of security for the Olympics represented “200 million euros.”
