Your hand luggage was over the weight limit. Instead of paying the expensive extra fee to the airline, the two girls tried a trick.

It was supposed to be a fairly short domestic flight for two 19-year-olds from Australia, but the journey from Melbourne to Adelaide ended up being as adventurous as it was fun for Adriana Ocampo and her friend Emily Altamura. The two students had already had a stressful time at Melbourne Airport when the flight they were supposed to take was canceled at the last minute. After they had survived the waiting time until the replacement flight, it was finally time for boarding – and the employees of the airline “Jetstar” checked the hand luggage of the travelers in advance.

The bad news: Adriana’s small suitcase was almost seven kilos too heavy. In order to be able to take him with her anyway, she would have had to pay 65 Australian dollars (approx. 40 euros). A lot of money for a 19-year-old – which is why the two students decided to solve the problem differently. Ocampo cleared a pile of clothes from her suitcase and began to wear as many of them as possible. Emily helped her. The two girls filmed each other awkwardly attempting to layer more and more T-shirts and sweaters.

Australian women put on more than five kilos of clothing

“The whole airport is staring at us,” giggles Adriana in the video. She later told the Daily Mail: “I looked like a bear. I’m relatively small and skinny and I turned into the complete opposite. I thought: I look like this one boy from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. ” In the end, both girls were dressed so heavily that only a pair of jeans, some socks and two pairs of shoes were left in the suitcase. They wore the rest on their bodies. 15 additional clothing items!

Because the dressing action had taken so long, the friends were finally the last passengers at the gate. The stress and the waiting time erupted in never-ending fits of laughter, and the airline crew also took it with humour. “Of course we see something like this from its funny side, but there are baggage regulations so that it’s fair for all travelers,” comments a spokeswoman for “Jetstar”. “It’s important to check the weight of luggage so that everyone on the plane has enough space for their belongings and so that we comply with security regulations.”

A reasonable solution

Luckily, everyone involved agreed in the end, without any arguments with the staff or a security risk: Adriana finally paid the extra fee – and was able to take off her various layers of clothing and pack them into the suitcase. Emily as well. Both sweating profusely as they walked to the gate, they had already realized that they wouldn’t survive the flight wrapped up like that. But: The attempt deserves respect!
