Free ride for the tractors – play with fears at any price

Twisted facts and dramatic images: This is how the public was misled to push through agricultural interests.

War, threatened food security, worsening droughts – every means seemed right, with which the agricultural lobby and their helpers in the EU Parliament painted a dark picture. In letters, in personal statements and in interviews, conservative MEPs and agriculture ministers have vehemently trumpeted that too much environmental protection is endangering food security.

The calculation worked, the EU Commission was persuaded and impressed by the picture of gloom: There was the green light for fallow land to be farmed again – with the simultaneous assurance that the farmers collect the premiums they collect for the fallow land , continue to be transferred – without any waste. The double jackpot succeeded: the money flowed, the fallow land was plowed again.

It’s just stupid that spoilsports have now gone public: environmental organizations that took a closer look and found out from the statistics that in Austria only 0.7 percent of the plowed fallow land was used to grow grain, from which bread is baked. More than two-thirds of the areas where the fallow land was interrupted were used to harvest concentrated feed for livestock.

Agricultural lobbyists and certain circles of MEPs have callously used the crisis as an opportunity; to follow the course they have always taken in order to push through interests: less protection of species, less climate protection, watering down the “Green Deal”, more pesticides.

It is a game of fears at any price, with twisted facts and unscrupulous propaganda with one goal: give the tractors free rein, no matter what the cost.
