The 140 years of the German-Malagasy treaty were marked yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Anosy. The first Treaty of Friendship between the Malagasy Kingdom and the German Empire was signed on May 15, 1883.

As Minister Yvette Sylla said in her speech, Germany remains an efficient and quiet force that works far from publicity. Indeed Germany remains the largest financial contributor within the European Union with 27%.

On May 9 and 10, 2023, intergovernmental negotiations between Madagascar and the Federal Republic of Germany were held in Berlin. It is a bilateral diplomatic mechanism that the two countries hold every two years in order to review the state of cooperation, to carry out the monitoring and evaluation of its implementation and to find ways of consolidate with a view to working better together in the face of the challenges inherent in the current climatic and geopolitical contexts.

At the end of these two days of negotiations, Germany announced new financial commitments totaling 47 million Euros for 2023-2024 within the framework of this bilateral cooperation. This amount will be divided between 28 million euros for financial cooperation and 19 million euros for technical cooperation.

The cooperation programs concern the environment and the protection of biodiversity, food security, including the adaptation of agricultural value chains to climate change, rural development and food security which includes the strengthening of resilience as well as fishing. and sustainable aquaculture; climate and renewable energies, including the promotion of rural electrification; good governance, including inclusive communal development and decentralization as well as the fight against corruption.

During the last session of the negotiations in December 2021, the German government made available additional funds amounting to 63 million Euros for the implementation of cooperation projects in the same areas.
