Heat turnaround traffic jam in Germany: Is the heating theater worth it?

ÜRecently, so much has been said about the reading difficulties of the little ones that the arithmetic deficits of the big and tall get hardly any attention. In the coming months and years, it will be crucial that everyone calculates correctly, for example when it comes to energy expenditure. The heat transition requires a clear head and sober figures. And at some point this culture war over the heat transition will end.

Then it will no longer be about “opinions and beliefs of the people”, against which no climate protection can be pursued, as the Federal Minister of Transport cleverly put it, but about convincing facts and figures. However, it’s not that far yet. The highly emotionalized energy transition policy is still primarily concerned with getting people to conscience and driving the electorate before them, instead of doing reason-led persuasion.

Researchers as climate sinners?

The calculations are still being made in Berlin, but it could take a while before everyone else understands that climate protection is not progressing with plus-minus zero and doing nothing. A Berliner could help by the way. The FU quantum physicist Jens Eisert has programmed and tested a climate calculator that is supposed to calculate the climate impact of each individual research project down to the kilo of carbon dioxide. A surprising amount of emissions are caused by the computing power of the computers and the constant research meetings and conferences.

According to Eisert, climate protection is also about being aware of what you are contributing and then questioning what of it is necessary. In any case, the equation cannot be solved with party prose, so careful calculations have to be made.
