Miniskirt, lion’s mane and irrepressible energy: This is how Tina Turner rocked her way into the hearts of an audience of millions. In her private life, the native American preferred things to be quieter: she lived in isolation in Switzerland.

Rock legend Tina Turner is dead. She died on Wednesday at the age of 83 after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich. This was announced by a spokesman in the evening. Her death caused sympathy and dismay. Turner’s management wrote, “With her, the world loses a music legend and role model.”

The “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” brought an audience of millions into ecstasy with her powerful voice, daring costumes, sexy dance routines and exuberant energy. That was mainly in the 80s and 90s. After a farewell tour in 2009, she retired into private life at the age of 70. According to her own statements, after decades of hard work, she enjoyed life without obligations.

After that, Turner rarely appeared in public, for example to promote a book or a musical about her life story. With her German partner Erwin Bach, who is 16 years her junior, she has lived on Lake Zurich in Switzerland since the 1990s. The two celebrated a lavish wedding party there in 2013. Turner later even accepted Swiss citizenship.

She has now died in Switzerland. Shortly after her death became known, there was great international sympathy. British rock star Mick Jagger was deeply saddened on Instagram: “I am so saddened by the death of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She really was an enormously talented artist and singer.” A spokeswoman for the White House in Washington spoke of a “great loss”. “Tina Turner was an icon, a music icon.”

Great international participation

British model Naomi Campbell wrote: “Rest in peace and strength THE QUEEN, LEGEND, ICON. There will never be another. Honor my times with you.” Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood posted a photo of Tina Turner and himself to Instagram and wrote, “God bless you Tina, the Queen of Rock and Soul and a dear friend of our family.”

Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams wrote: “The world has just lost one of the greatest female artists of all time. I will forever be grateful for the time we spent together touring, in the studio and as friends.”

There were also reactions from Germany. Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) tweeted: “With her unmistakable style, she shaped pop music for many years. In short: she was simply the best. Rest in peace!”

Moderator Thomas Gottschalk also paid tribute to Tina Turner after her death. “She was a power woman … One of the first and one of the last!” Wrote the 73-year-old on Instagram. “One of her songs was called: ‘I might have been Queen'”. In addition, the entertainer presented a picture from earlier years with Tina Turner on stage.

The Swiss Federal President Alain Berset was also deeply affected. “With Tina Turner’s death, the world has lost an icon. Her songs and the many memories associated with them will remain,” Berset wrote on Twitter. His thoughts are with the relatives of this woman, who has found a second home in Switzerland.

fans trust

Meanwhile, fans expressed their condolences in front of the singer’s house in Switzerland. Candles and flowers were placed in front of the gate of her villa in Küsnacht near Zurich in the evening, as the Keystone-SDA news agency reported on site.

According to the report, fans lit candles in memory of the rock legend. Since 1994 she has lived in the municipality in the Swiss canton of Zurich.

First career with Ike Turner

She rose to fame as a duo with then-husband Ike Turner in the ’60s and ’70s. Hits like “River Deep – Mountain High” and “Nutbush City Limits” stormed the charts in many countries. As Turner revealed much later, the marriage was an ordeal for her. Ike beat and bullied her. She fled from him at the age of 37. Turner gave up all financial claims from the joint music creation in order to get through the divorce quickly and started with a solo career.

At the age of 45 she shone in the spotlight again: the album “Private Dancer” was her solo breakthrough in 1984. From then on she filled stadiums and music stages all over the world. She landed numerous hits: “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”, “Proud Mary”, “We Don’t Need Another Hero” or “Be Tender with Me Baby” are just a few of them.

Numerous music awards

Turner has won numerous music awards. In 2021 she was inducted into the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” in Cleveland, USA. “If they’re still giving me awards at 81, I must have done something right,” she joked at the ceremony via video link from Switzerland.

Turner had two biological sons who predeceased her at ages 59 and 62. She herself had colon cancer and kidney failure. Her husband donated one of his kidneys to her in 2017. In the 2019 autobiography “My Love Story” she reported on many painful experiences in life, but honored Bach as her savior and the greatest love of her life.
