Since 2020, UBA Guinea (United Bank for Africa) through its Foundation has been organizing the National Essay Competition or National Essay Ccompetition (NEC) in English. A program that aims to promote the culture of reading, encourage healthy and intellectual competition between middle school and high school students. Each year, this competition is held in the 20 African countries where UBA operates. In Guinea, more than three thousand students from different cities in the country took part in the 2023 edition of this competition.

Each of the challengers submitted at least one essay of no more than 750 words on the topic: Last year, the results of the national exams were catastrophic with a low pass rate. How do you see this situation? As a student, what solutions do you propose to improve the level of Guinean students? ” For a month, they were subjected to “severe tests”. From one exam to another, from one selection to another, twelve of them were distinguished “on the basis of merit”.

Friday, May 19, the winners were rewarded through an award ceremony in Conakry. They all received laptops, trophies and accolades. Each of the first three: Djenabou Fofana, from the Maarif Turco-Guinean schools; Kadiatou Bah from Saint-Georges de Taouyah; and Mariam Diallo from Saint-André de Labé won a scholarship worth ten million Guinean francs. The two schools with the most candidates, (Groupe Scolaire Saint-Georges and Ousmane Camara) received a batch of books worth two million Guinean francs each.

reward merit

Invited to this award ceremony, the Minister of Pre-university Education and Literacy Guillaume Hawing said he was impressed, himself having been a candidate for this competition in 2020 with the school in which he gave the lessons. He says that when he was appointed head of this ministry, the president of the transition expressly recommended to him “to ensure that emulation, merit is at the center of everything you are going to undertake”. He prides himself on often participating in award ceremonies for merit and quality, such as this national essay contest. “This is our roadmap, this is what was recommended to us. We can only accompany them in this direction”.

Minister Hawing congratulates himself for having saved Guinean education at a time when it was dying. “We inherited a disastrous situation, if we didn’t have the courage to make the real diagnosis, the Guinean school would be buried in the years to come”. He is delighted to notice students who have understood that now only merit rewards and that the practices of yesterday (fraud) will no longer pass. We should no longer continue to trample the Guinean education system. “We had to integrate its principles”. The future of the country would rest on the shoulders of teachers, parents of students and the students themselves.

First of the winners of this edition of the NEC, Djeinabou Fofana, in terminal mathematical science at the Turkish-Guinean Maarif schools, shed tears of emotions. She couldn’t believe she had won first prize. Delighted, she did not lack recognition towards her parents, her school, the supervisors and the UBA Foundation for the initiative. To students from other schools, it encourages massive applications for the 4th edition. According to her, this is one of the best opportunities to demonstrate her abilities, and prove that we are better.
