Russian scientist, businessman and philanthropist Dmitry Zimin died at the age of 89 on Wednesday, December 22. “It happened today, not at home, in Switzerland. He left in full consciousness, peacefully, a little sad about us and about life, but still with relief – in recent months he was seriously ill,” said his son Boris.

Dmitry Zimin was born in Moscow in 1933. In 1957 he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute, and later worked for several decades in the field of defense electronics. In 1992 he created the joint-stock company Vympel-Communications, a year later the Beeline trademark appeared. In 1996, VimpelCom became the first Russian company on the New York Stock Exchange.

Since the 2000s, Zimin has been involved in charitable activities. In 2002, he founded the Dynasty Foundation, aimed at supporting and popularizing Russian fundamental science. In 2015, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation included this organization in the register of non-profit organizations – “foreign agents”, which drew sharp criticism from the academic community. Zimin announced the closure of the fund and left Russia. In 2016, together with his son Boris, he founded the Zimin Foundation, which continues to support science and education, but does not limit its activities to Russia.
