Migration figures peaked in 2022. Prime Minister Sunak is concerned, but the population is more relaxed.

It’s bad news for Rishi Sunak. On Thursday, the British Bureau of Statistics published the latest figures on migration. As expected, immigration peaked last year: the bottom line was that around 606,000 people came to Great Britain in 2022, around 20 percent more than in the previous year.

When he took office, the prime minister made the same promise as his Tory predecessors: to finally reduce migration – after all, this was one of the most important concerns of Brexit voters. “The numbers are too high, it’s as simple as that,” Sunak said in a TV interview.
