Shortly before Frank Hemberger had to go back to the clinic, he was on the soccer field at his club SG 47 Bruchmühle. Take another look at how the youngsters train, maybe give a few more tips, encourage them a bit. It is actually the 54-year-old Fredersdorfer who needs hope and courage at this time. Because the football coach is suffering from cancer for the second time.

The youth leader actually believed that he had conquered blood cancer, as his neighbor Simone Farchmin reports. The passionate trainer, who was named trainer of the year by the district sports association Märkisch-Oderland in 2016, was confronted with the diagnosis of blood cancer around three years ago. At that time he fought his way back to life – and changed his everyday life. “Live in the here and now, don’t wait for later,” is how Simone Farchim describes his new motto.

Wedding guests should donate to DKMS

The former facility manager, who has a lot of craftsmanship, built a pool to start the day swimming, fell in love during his rehabilitation and traveled. When he finally married his new partner, the couple refrained from presents, but asked the guests to donate: for the DKMS non-profit GmbH, formerly the German bone marrow donor database, which has set itself the goal of finding stem cell donors for people suffering from blood cancer.

In order to survive, Hemberger needs a stem cell donation

“He couldn’t have known then that he would need a donor himself,” says friend Simone Farchmin sadly. In April, after a routine check, the athlete received the shocking news: the cancer was back in the form of therapy-related leukemia. “In order to survive, he now needs a stem cell donation,” reports the DKMS. But it is difficult to find a suitable donor in your own family because the father of two, Frank Hemberger, has no siblings, most of whom are suitable.

Registration campaign on June 3rd in Bruchmühle

That’s why his club decided without further ado to help the coach, who was once a board member himself. As Kristin Roock, mother of a son who plays soccer at SG 47 Bruchmühle, reports, an organization team has now come together to organize a large registration campaign on Saturday, June 3rd, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of SG 47 Bruchmühle, Landsberger Straße 30, in the Bruchmühle district of Altlandsberg.

Anyone who is healthy and between the ages of 17 and 55 can register as a potential donor on site. “Open your mouth, put in your chopsticks, be a donor – that’s the motto,” says Olaf Krüger from the board of directors of the DKMS slogan. The campaign is accompanied by a DKMS employee who can also answer questions about the procedure.

Home game and children’s party

In addition, the home game of the SG 47 Bruchmühle takes place and there is also a lot on offer for families, says Kristin Roock, who refers to the children’s festival in front of the community center, where there is a preliminary drawing. Those who cannot register for reasons of age, but still want to do something, will not come in vain either, because donations are still being collected. “Registration costs 40 euros to DKMS and is financed by donations,” says Olaf Krüger.

In mid-May, Hemberger’s club asked for donations at a game. As Olaf Krüger reports, many viewers voluntarily paid more for the entrance fee, which is donated in full to the DKMS. Furthermore, the sporting opponents from Petershagen became supporters and paid into the donation fund. Additional proceeds came from the sale of cakes. “We received around 2,000 euros on this day alone, of which 50 registrations can already be paid for,” Krüger said happily.

Frank Hemberger is currently being informed about the great willingness to help by his friends and club mates, primarily via mobile phone. “He said that if his genetic twin is not found right away, registration could still save the lives of other patients,” reports his neighbor. Everyone who knows him is sure that Frank Hemberger would like to be back on the football field himself and cheer on the youngsters. He is just a fighter, even if he is dealing with a very unfair opponent this time.
