Tamaulipas reports an outbreak of meningitis and another of neonatal sepsis

There are difficult times for Tamaulipas due to a double problem caused by an outbreak of meningitis and another of neonatal sepsis. Both are separate events that have been identified in different parts of the entity and have left several affected patients. Even in the case of the former, it has already spread to the United States because some of the infected people are residents of Texas.

Everything that is known about the outbreak of meningitis in Tamaulipas

On the one hand, the Federal Ministry of Health (SSa) applies a comprehensive plan for the care of cases of meningitis in Mexico-United States, associated with neuraxial block due to surgical procedures in the private medical units “Clínica K-3” and “Hospital River Side Surgical Center”, in the city of Matamoros.

The SSa, in coordination with the state health services, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), provide medical care and carry out epidemiological surveillance actions, diagnosis by laboratory, health verification, case tracking and training of health personnel working in public hospitals in Matamoros, Ciudad Victoria and Reynosa.

So far, 23 cases have been identified, of which nine reside in Texas, United States, and 14 in Mexico. Of the latter, four are suspected and have symptoms; five are probable and also present alterations in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) results, and another five have been confirmed by the presence of the fungus Fusarium solani by molecular PCR tests.

First fatal case of the outbreak

Regarding the nine cases identified in the United States, eight people have symptoms and their condition is stable; one died. The neighboring country to the north is investigating another death possibly from this cause.

The General Hospital “Dr. Alfredo Pumarejo” from the Tamaulipas Secretary of Health, in collaboration with the General Hospital of Zone No. 13 of the IMSS in Matamoros, serve as reference units for all patients.

Meanwhile, the Federal Commission Against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) It carries out the investigation of medicines and establishments. The two private clinics allegedly involved were suspended on May 13.

Personnel from the Sanitary Jurisdiction III Matamoros identified 547 people who, between January 1 and May 13, 2023, underwent some surgical or anesthetic procedure in these private medical units, who are given medical follow-up to assess if they present symptoms of the illness.

Specialists from Mexico City, integrated into the Public Health Incident Management Command, coordinated by the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE), train medical personnel from Matamoros, Reynosa and Ciudad Victoria, on the clinical approach to be applied in the medical care process of people with symptoms associated with neuraxial block.

It is worth mentioning that the Government of Mexico became aware of this event through a communication, on May 11, 2023, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in compliance with the International Health Regulations (RSI).

Outbreak of neonatal sepsis in Tampico

On the other hand, the SSa informs that until today in the Regional General Hospital number 6 of the IMSS in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, four babies have been reported with bloodstream infection (STI) by Enterobacter cloacae, confirmed by blood culture.

Two of them remain hospitalized and stable in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); one was discharged due to improvement and one more unfortunately died and is under opinion by a group of experts. IMSS personnel investigate cases and strengthen prevention and control measures.
