940 people disappeared within a year.

Vienna/Lesvos. The catastrophic conditions in the refugee camps on Lesvos are once again the focus of attention: in the two reception centers on the Greek island, Mavrovouni and Megala Therma, the medical emergency aid organization Doctors Without Borders is observing a policy of deterrence and a dramatic deterioration in the situation of migrants. It is said that 940 people disappeared within a year. “When we are alerted that people are newly arriving in need of urgent medical attention, we often spend hours and sometimes days looking for them as they often hide in forests,” says Nihal Osman, MSF project coordinator Lesvos. “People we found told us about encounters with masked men posing as doctors to gain their trust.”

On May 17, the Greek authorities stopped providing food to recognized refugees and announced plans to evict them, MSF reports. “People complain of the humiliation they suffer from waiting in line for hours and the frustration of being given less to eat. Athens is using food reductions as a bargaining chip to force people out of the facility,” Osman said.

Karas demands clarification

Greece’s government has also come under renewed criticism for carrying out illegal pushbacks of migrants at its borders. ÖVP mandater Othmar Karas is therefore calling for the opening of EU infringement proceedings against the country. His party colleagues in Brussels want nothing to do with it. (ag./red.)
