It is a small section of a huge mountain range: the Bavarian Alps are only 200 kilometers long and border the large Alpine massif to the north. But the photographic documentation of this part became for the Munich photographer Bernd Römmelt “one of my biggest, most exhausting and most nerve-wracking projects”, as he puts it in the foreword to his recently published new Illustrated book “Natural wonders of the Bavarian Alps” writes.

In two and a half years “I’ve covered over 80,000 meters in altitude, climbed countless peaks at the most inconvenient times of the day to show the Bavarian Alps in the most beautiful light, so spectacular that they could compete with the giants further south.”

The result is impressive. Because in his more than 200 pictures he put the mountains in a very special light in a figurative sense, mostly in the early morning and late evening hours, which gives the walls, ridges and alpine meadows a shimmering glow.

The nature, travel and mountain photographer Römmelt has already won numerous awards and published more than 30 illustrated books, including the illustrated books “Im Bann des Nordens” (2017) and “Polarlichter” (2018), also published by Knesebeck Verlag.

After all the travels on previous projects up north and to Alaska, he has discovered an obvious goal not only for himself but also for us readers when working on his latest book: his photography turns the Bavarian Alps into a true natural wonder.
