“My test site reports that oak mushrooms have started to grow,” rejoices Mrs. Vaněčková, who is at home in nature. “I’ve been coming here on the embankment for 49 years, it’s unbelievable that they still bear fruit, only the oaks are getting very old,” lamented the successful mushroom picker.
Oak mushrooms grow in groups in deciduous or mixed forests at lower elevations, they can also be found in parks, cemeteries and dams of ponds. They most often appear under oaks and hornbeams.
This year’s first find made Mrs. Stanislava very happy. She also immediately knew what she was going to make of them. “Part of it was cutlets, there will also be a mixture for toast and sauce,” revealed the mushroom picker, who goes for fragrant forest treasures in winter and spring as well. He also happily collects oyster mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, champignons and champignons.
Not to be confused with the gallbladder
Inexperienced mushroom pickers often mistake the oak mushroom for the gall mushroom, which is inedible due to its bitterness. “The gall mushroom grows under conifers, while the oak mushroom grows almost exclusively under deciduous trees. They also differ from each other in a different color of the tubes and a different taste of the pulp. The gall bladder tends to have a whitish-pink underside and its flesh is bitter, which is not the case with the oak mushroom.” describes mycologist Jaroslav Malý on his Natur Atlas website.
According to Mrs. Vaněčková, education is very important when collecting mushrooms. “A good mushroom picker does not make raids into the forest, because for him the most valuable thing is to walk tens of kilometers, get to know the biotopes, the influence of the weather and the growth period of mushrooms. His reward is finding the location of the mushroom for which he set out.” Stanislava Vaněčková describes her personal approach and reminds us how to behave in the forest.
“What I don’t want to collect, I don’t dig up, I tread carefully, because tomorrow something might start growing here. To identify mushrooms I don’t know, I only take a minimal amount, sometimes just one piece is enough. It’s like having your own utility garden.” concludes the vital lady.
