The Dutch police have at one Demonstration of climate activists the group Extinction Rebellion arrested more than 1,500 people. For the seventh time, they had blocked a section of a motorway in the city center to protest against Dutch subsidies for fossil fuels. They used water cannon to evict the activists and a total of 1,579 people arrested, police said on Saturday night.
40 of them would be prosecuted, among other things, for property damage and insult, the statement said. Accordingly, one of the activists had bitten a police officer during the arrest.
Several Dutch celebrities were also among the demonstrators, including actress Carice van Houten, best known for her role as priestess Melisandre in the series Game of Thrones. The Dutch news agency ANP reported that she was arrested on Saturday but was allowed to return home in the evening.
