National and regional leaders have concluded this Sunday a summit chaired by the president of Somalia, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, in which they have agreed on a new political ‘road map’ for the country that includes holding elections in 2024 and the introduction of the Universal suffrage.
The national consultation, which has lasted for four days and has included figures from the entire political spectrum, has ended with an agreement that contemplates holding elections every five years under a proportional and closed-list electoral system.
The new ‘road map’ towards democracy, which supposes a transition towards universal suffrage, will implement the formula of ‘one vote, one person’. Likewise, the agreement will limit the political parties that attend the elections to two in an attempt to avoid fragmentation.
The parliamentary, presidential and vice-presidential elections will take place on November 30, 2024, although what will happen in the Somali semi-autonomous region of Somaliland remains to be specified, the Hiiran news portal has collected.
Until now, the Somali political system did not contemplate direct voting, so the president was recently elected by members of Parliament after an indirect process in which the population does not have the right to vote and in which political parties do not participate.
