Water is a scarce commodity that must be used in the most efficient and effective way possible, and agriculture is one of those productive areas where optimization techniques for this resource are most developed. On the one hand, to use only what is necessary and, on the other, to make agricultural production as profitable as possible.

Leader of the agroecological farm, Las Mercedes, belonging to the CCS Álvaro Reynoso in Alquízar, the producer Ariel Álvarez recognizes the sovereignty achieved, in this sense, by peasants in the area thanks to the support of projects such as Apocoop (Support for Agricultural Intercooperation).

“About four years ago they arrived offering us the possibility of installing sprinkler irrigation systems. People didn’t believe it; but, I bet on it and there it is! I can water up to 12 sprinklers. It is a very efficient technology. It is designed for one hectare, although at the moment I attend to more than two, of the 7.78 that I own”.

Sprinkler irrigation systems allow a better adjustment of power and orientation, its low water pressure helps prevent plants from suffering any damage and represents considerable savings in water consumption.

In the midst of the energy contingency facing the country, the application of this technology has also allowed Ariel to balance the expenses for consumption of electrical energy that the use of a 55 kWh motor entails.

In its first phase, extended only in Alquízar, the municipality received two irrigation systems located in the CCS José Antonio Echeverría with the aim of promoting the cultivation of flowers in this area, explained Dayanis Alonso Molina, coordinator of Apoccop in the territory.

“In a second stage, the study of the irrigation technology established in the province determined the obsolescence of these highly consuming means of electricity and diesel, with negative repercussions for the soil.

“Then it was decided to guarantee, within the lines of commercialization, production and benefit that promotes the project, the incorporation of portable sprinkler irrigation systems.

“There are 11 systems installed that benefit 11 hectares of crops in the town: three in the Credit and Services Cooperatives (CCS) Rubén Martínez Villena and Álvaro Reynoso and two in the CCS Pedro Rodríguez Santana, almost all dedicated to the benefit of various crops. and small livestock.

“The others are in the Cuba-Mexico Friendship Agricultural Production Cooperatives, Capitán Tomás and Rubén Martínez Villena.

“Due to its proven efficiency, the entry of another 10 systems is planned: two for the Güira municipality and the rest to benefit the livestock module of the Cuba-Mexico Friendship CPA and other areas; We have even noticed a tiny one available for self-consumption at the Pedro Rodríguez Santana Special School”, concluded Alonso Molina.

The operation of this technology allowed the achievement of good performance from a more humane work environment, which makes the task more bearable. Because there is a reality: in this task of producing for the people, if it is not a crop it is in another, but the irrigation systems are used almost daily.
