Could the blue bird never see the European skies again? Twitter “will be banned” from the European Union in the event of non-compliance with its rules, warned on Monday the French Minister for Digital Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. “Twitter, if it does not comply with our rules, will be banned, in the event of a repeat offense, from the European Union”, hammered on franceinfo Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate in charge of the Digital Transition and Telecommunications.

On Saturday, Twitter officially pulled out of the EU’s code of practice against online misinformation. But the social network, led by the American billionaire Elon Musk, remains legally subject to compliance with European rules, recalled European Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton.

“Twitter plays an important role in public debate, but we cannot take the risk that a social network such as Twitter will be taken hostage by the proponents of disinformation and that, consequently, our public debate, our democracy be affected, insisted Jean-Noël Barrot. This is why we have established clear rules and Twitter will have to comply with them. »

Asked about future European regulations on generative artificial intelligence (“the IA Act”) currently under discussion, the French minister, while recognizing the need to “give a framework” to the development of AI, tackled the position of the European Parliament which risks “bringing the European Union out of technological history”.

France wants to “invest” in AI

“At this stage, the position of the European Parliament is excessive because it imposes audit obligations, transparency obligations which are excessive for this type of model”, like ChatGPT, he estimated.

These AI models “are in a frantic race in which we must not get left behind or we will lock ourselves into decades of subjugation and technological dependence”, he continued, calling to “invest” in the field.
