Today there is a propensity to consider cultural knowledge as a useless addition. It is interpreted as an attribute of people who have not had emergencies or “important” things to attend to, a kind of leisure disguise.
Even what was previously an exhibition of ignorance is now flaunted with foolish arrogance, saying that “facts are one thing and theory is another.” The exoneration of culture from its preponderant position is not without consequences. According to the dictionary, culture is the “set of knowledge that allows someone to develop a critical judgment of it.” That is, they are conceptual tools that allow freedom and efficiency in personal discernment, in order to make competent use of one’s own reason and thus become a superior version of ourselves.
One of the key knowledge of all cultural conformation is historical awareness. This is achieved by assimilating information and a series of relationships that allow us to understand why we are where we are and where we are going as individuals and as a society.
It is clear that everyone can undertake the pleasant and endless task of self-education on their own, however, societies have incorporated ways of highlighting certain pasts from the present. One of these resources are commemorations and holidays. The circumstance that a key date for a nation is non-working, is with the notorious purpose that no fact of the busy daily life competes in attention with what it intends to evoke.
The effectiveness of the holiday as a method to focus on a defining past would be quite questionable. It seems to have been obtained, more than a cultural result, a tourist one. They should not be mutually exclusive, but the distinguished figures of history, in the general consciousness, would seem today to appear as distant and harmless ghosts of fashion. This May 25, in circumstances in which Argentina needs more than ever to recover its founding values, the patriotic spirit was blurred. A previously scheduled political event was held in the national capital.
If anyone believes that historical awareness is still being honored by selecting such a date for a political event, thus forcing the reason for the holiday into the background, they will be considered as those who believed that a government belongs to a political party and not to all Argentines and that the day of the homeland, the most glorious of our nation, can fade it with fleeting flags, without valuing the deep feelings of society and history will always be the one that will judge it as a painful action. No one could escape the fact that it would be inevitable that the media and social networks would become inevitable sounding boards for such an event, making the historical component of the day descend to the subsoils of neglect. In the undeniable detriment of historical consciousness, it is possible that a powerful cause of the harsh circumstances that Argentina, on this May 25, tried to cope with, can be found.
