Düsseldorf The job market for chief sustainability officers is booming. As a “green conscience” in the company, those responsible for sustainability should ensure that everything from purchasing to production to customer service is organized in an environmentally friendly and socially just manner and that legal requirements are observed.
Due to the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, which came into force at the beginning of the year, the demand for such experts is currently increasing. Companies with more than 3000 employees in Germany must prepare risk analyses, appoint human rights officers and document measures. From 2024, the law will also apply to companies with 1,000 employees.
“The orders to find suitable candidates are increasing – from start-ups to corporations,” says Julia Arco-Valley. She is a consultant at the international HR consultancy Spencer Stuart and has specialized in the search for candidates for the so-called ESG area of responsibility (environment, social, governance). Positions for heads of sustainability are often located directly below the board of directors – and come with a six-figure director’s or division manager’s salary.
