DHL Freightone of the leading providers of road transport in Europe, has piloted a Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 Tractor for several days in practice.

The battery-electric truck transported an average of 12 tons of production material from the DHL Freight terminal in Hagen near Dortmund to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kassel, some 175 kilometers away, without having to stop at carry. The electric truck traveled 350 kilometers per day. Among other things, the batteries were charged at a truck charging station on the company premises in Kassel. The test results will serve as the basis for planning the conversion to CO2-neutral delivery transport to the plant.

DHL Freight is responsible for the transport of production materials from suppliers in North Rhine-Westphalia and partly from the Benelux countries to the Mercedes-Benz Trucks plants. Production material is initially collected from suppliers, consolidated at DHL Freight terminals such as the one in Hagen, and then transported to the plants.

For his part, Dr. Frank H. Lehmann, Director of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kassel, stated: “The Mercedes-Benz plant in Kassel is the center of competence for electric drive systems at Daimler Truck. It is therefore logical that we are now also working intensively on the electrification of the delivery transport to our plant. We are delighted that DHL has participated as a major logistics partner in the trials.”

Uwe Brinks, CEO of DHL Freight, commented: “As one of the world’s leading logistics companies, the transition to CO2-neutral vehicles is an essential component of our sustainability strategy towards zero-emission logistics. With the eActros 300 Tractor, we have been able to successfully test its applicability in practice.”

In line with the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s sustainability goal of net-zero logistics from 2050, DHL Freight is actively working on reducing the carbon footprint of freight and road transport. With the Green Technology Roadmap, DHL Freight has developed a clear strategy for environmentally friendly road transport. In the short term, the land transport specialist focuses on investments in transition technologies, and in the long term, it seeks to improve CO2 efficiency through solutions such as electric and hydrogen trucks.

Electric trucks in distribution transport: eActros 300 Tractor in series production from autumn

The eActros 300 Tractor is compatible with all common European semi-trailers, taking into account the maximum permitted length of the total tractor/trailer combination. The electric semi-trailer tractor is based on the same technology as the eActros 300/400. Three battery packs, each with an installed battery capacity of 112 kWh, allow a range of up to 220 km on a single battery charge. The eActros 300 Tractor can be charged with up to 160 kW: all three battery packs need just over an hour to charge from 20 to 80 percent on a standard DC fast charging station with a charging current of 400 A. The Serial production of the semi-trailer truck is scheduled to begin in the fall of this year.
