French hopeful Luca Van Assche (82nd) won his very first Grand Slam match on Monday, aged 19, two months after entering the top 100.
«It’s my first final draw at Roland-Garros, inevitably there is always a little pressure, I came back a little stressed, but I started very well. With the help of the public too, it’s always much easier for us French people to play here, it’s always a huge strength, we are pushed from start to finish. It was super cool for me to play in front of them, from the start I felt comfortable, little by little I managed to free myself more and more and I played a very good game. I stayed calm and serene from start to finish, I think that’s why I managed to win in three sets. I hope to go much further. I really wanted to win my first Grand Slam match, here at Roland-Garros (after his defeat in the first round at the Australian Open in January, editor’s note), it’s done. Now I aim much further.»
