Closure in China (Photo: Robert Wai / Shatterstock)
A particularly unusual move: The Chinese government announced today (Thursday) the imposition of a full closure in the city of Xi’an, in order to stop a relatively small outbreak of corona in the city. As a result, 13 million residents of the city will not be allowed to leave their homes – even though in the last two weeks only 200 people have been diagnosed in total.
As part of the restrictions, which were intended to promote a policy of “zero contagion”, it was decided that all public transport services would be discontinued in the city – with anyone having to leave the city being required to present a negative corona test as well as a work permit. Police checkpoints were set up on the highways to make sure residents did not leave the city, and the local airport was also completely closed.
It was further stipulated that city residents would not be able to leave their homes at all – similar to the first closure of the corona plague, which was imposed in Wuhan city in January 2020. One person from each household could leave once every two days to purchase essential products like food, water and medicine. Unless they are working in a job that has been defined as essential.
