SUnder the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, the National Health Security Agency (ANSS) and its partners, in particular the World Health Organization (WHO), have before the press this Friday, May 26, 2023 , announced the end of the Covid-19 pandemic as a public health emergency of international concern. According to statistics from the head of the ANSS surveillance department, Guinea has recorded 38,662 people who tested positive, including 807 cases of death for more than 10 million doses of vaccines.

“Nowadays, after the research carried out, it appears that omicron is the variant of Corona that is increasingly circulating in Guinea. In terms of prospects, the ANSS is continuing screening and vaccination against covid-19 in all the prefectures of the country”, explained Sory Condé.

If the end of this disease has been declared in Guinea, the fact remains that its existence is still felt internationally. This is why the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health called for more vigilance in his speech. Dr. Mohamed Lamine Yansané, moreover, spoke of five (5) main measures which the health authorities of Guinea must take into account. These are among others: “epidemiological surveillance, communication measures vis-à-vis the population…”, he mentioned.

The World Health Organization, represented by Dr Jean Marie Kipéla, gave some statistics on cases of death following Covid.

“In three years, COVID-19 has turned our world upside down. 765,222,932 cases, nearly seven million deaths (6,921,614) have been reported to WHO, including 807 in Guinea, but we know that the toll is several times higher, at least 20 million deaths worldwide” , said the WHO representative, before continuing with some recommendations to the health authorities, before reiterating the commitment of his institution has always accompanied Guinea.

“In summary, it should be remembered that the virus is circulating and the member states of the WHO must:

1. Maintain epidemiological surveillance and strengthen it at all levels;

2. Strengthen the health system in the country and reinforce the achievements of the response;

3.Maintain immunization. The COVAX mechanism continues to support the country through funding available from GAVI;

4. Public awareness and effective involvement of the media in this risk communication and community engagement effort. It is in this spirit that the Pandemic Fund mechanism and the Treaty being negotiated with Member States can help strengthen the International Health Regulations in the context of health security in an increasingly interdependent world. In Guinea, WHO will continue to support the Government through the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, for an integrated approach to prevention and response to COVID-19 by strengthening surveillance through the implementation of the IDSR by the routineization of the COVID-19 vaccination via the EPI”, he indicated, specifying all the same that the genomic surveillance and the improvement of our structures for the management of severe cases (intensive care and resuscitation essentially will have to be bets.
