She was a journalist, writer and essayist, winner of the National Book Award in 2005 for nonfiction with the book The year of magical thinking. Among the exponents of new journalism – a literary genre based on the mixture of narrative techniques and tools typical of journalistic investigation -, in his novels and reportages he represented, with dry style and depth of analysis, the dissolution of values and consumerism in the contemporary American society. In 2007 Didion received the National Book Foundation’s Special Contribution to American Letters Medal annually for the literary combination of elegant prose and corrosive intelligence.
