In 1992, a tortoise shell of the species Stupendemys (“amazing tortoise”) was discovered in Venezuela, 3.3 meters long and 2.18 meters wide, which corresponds to an animal 5.25 meters long and six tons. of weight. Ten million years ago, the region was occupied by a shallow, warm-water inland sea, called the Sea of Pebas, in whose waters lived gigantic turtles and a wide variety of crocodiles. Turtle shells have been found with teeth marks from Purussaurus, the largest of the crocodiles, one of them, with a 60-centimeter wound, shows signs of healing, which means that the turtle, despite having lost a leg and the tail, survived.
