As of Thursday, Basque women will be able to begin to benefit from three of the novelties that attracted the most attention when Parliament three and a half months ago, with the votes of the left and the nationalists and the “no” of PP, Cs and Vox , approved the new abortion law.

On June 1, three months after its publication in the BOE, three new rights come into force that take the form of paid sick leave. They are the prenatal rest period, the specific temporary disability due to very painful menstruation and the loss due to abortion, whether it is the result of a voluntary interruption or the failure of the pregnancy due to illness or accident. Next, we detail each of them.

All pregnant women will be entitled to paid leave from the first day of the 39th week of gestation until delivery. Social Security will pay all expenses except those of the first day, which will be paid by the company. Women under 21 do not need to have contributed to benefit from the measure and the requirements are minimal for the rest.

  1. Painful and disabling periods

As of the same date, the specific leave will work so that women with especially painful and disabling periods can rest those days at home. The subsidy will be covered entirely by the State and reaches any worker with this ailment. It will be the doctor who indicates the duration of the disability and may agree on it as many times as he deems appropriate, without a time limit.

  1. Interruption of pregnancy

The third required benefit is the leave for women who suffer a termination of pregnancy, whether voluntary or not. Convalescence seeks to alleviate both physical and mental disabilities. The doctor will determine the duration which, in any case, will be extended as long as you require health care or are unable to work. All female workers will have this right, without minimum contributions.
