Cabinet decides to revive collapsed economy

Important talks on obtaining assistance from the International Monetary Fund due to the economic crisis affecting Sri Lanka will be held at the forthcoming Cabinet meeting on January 3.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance have also been invited to this Cabinet meeting.

Most of the ministers consider it appropriate to seek the help of the International Monetary Fund to keep the rupee afloat in order to recover from the current economic crisis.

The consensus of all cabinet members has been reached on floating the rupee. A majority of ministers have agreed to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund.

The matter was discussed in detail at the last Cabinet meeting. However, the head of state has decided that the final decision will be taken at the next cabinet meeting.

The exchange rate of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka is within the range of 200 rupees per US dollar.

However, the value of the dollar in foreign currency exchanges and international currency exchange institutions in the country has remained at 250 rupees.
