“Moldova is not alone”: In the continent’s poorhouse, Europe wanted to send a signal of unity. But the summit also revealed several lines of conflict.
Wien/Chisinau. A winery in the Republic of Moldova was the hub of world politics on Thursday. Heads of state and government from 47 countries frolic at Mimi Castle, which lies at the heart of a geopolitical hotspot: on the border with war-torn Ukraine and just a few kilometers from Transnistria, the breakaway province of Moldova where pro-Russian separatists rule and still rule Kremlin troops are always stationed.
The fact that the two-day summit of the European Political Community (EPC) took place on the edge of Europe this time was no coincidence, but a message that Moldova will not be forgotten: “You are not alone”.
