Roma. Italy will put an end to the 550 euros of citizenship allowance paid to low-income people since 2019. “Inclusion vouchers” will be introduced instead of the regulation that 4 million people benefited from last year.

According to the news in the Italian press, from January 1, 2024, the citizenship benefit will be more limited, the so-called „inclusion coupons“ will be replaced with. The citizenship benefit of an average of 550 euros per month introduced in 2019 benefits all low-income people, while ‘inclusion vouchers’ will only be reserved for households with disabilities, minors and people over 60. The amount of social assistance will also be limited to 500 euros. In addition, support of 280 euros will be provided for people living in rental housing.

According to another measure taken by the Meloni government, recruitment of workers will be facilitated through fixed-term contracts. Companies that hire people who have received coverage checks will be exempted from paying employer contributions for one year.

Meloni’s opponents and trade unions described these measures as “provocation”. While the Meloni government speaks of a central reform for Italy, the opposition fears escalating social injustice. (yenivatan.at)
