The food price index, prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), stood in May at its lowest level since April 2021, after falling 2.6% compared to the last month. In this way, the reference is 22.1% below the all-time high reached in March 2022, when the price index climbed to 159.7 points, after having fallen in 13 of the last 14 months.

The relief in the pressure of food prices observed in May responds to the decreases observed in the subindices for dairy products, vegetable oils and cereals, while the references for meat and sugar rebounded in May. Specifically, the cereal price index is 25.3% below the record value reached a year ago, due to better supply prospects for the next season.

However, in the Spanish CPI this fall is not observed. The price index published by the INE, corresponding to April, which is the latest disaggregated data, reflects that unprocessed foods have registered an interannual rise of 8.8% and 3% so far this year. For their part, cereals, one of the products that the FAO says has fallen the most worldwide, rose 18.2% in the interannual rate and 4.8% in the four months of 2023. If we compare it with April In 2021, the price of food has increased by 24.4% and that of cereals has risen by 42%.
