Another in a series of investigations against the world’s leading electric car maker: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this week that it has begun investigating a complaint against Tesla, on suspicion the company has created a dangerous distraction for its vehicle drivers, which could lead to disaster, This was reported by the Associated Press.

According to the manager, “so far, the agency has received a complaint from one owner (car) describing the possibility of games, confirming that this capability is available from December 2020 in Tesla cars equipped with Passenger Play. Before that, games were only allowed when the vehicle was parked.” . The director noted that he would investigate the “potential for distraction of Passenger Play drivers while the vehicle is driving”, and that his investigators “would evaluate aspects of the possibility, including the frequency and use scenarios of Passenger Play”.

As you may recall, in recent months, Tesla owners have noticed that in a software update released for their cars last summer, a number of new games have been added, which can be played when the vehicle is in motion. This is in contrast to previous games that were available in Tesla cars, which only worked when the vehicle was in parking mode, and stopped working immediately if it was in motion.

The update, and with it the danger of distracting drivers that will result in accidents, came out for all four Tesla models from 2017 to 2022 – which means about 580,000 cars in the US alone. The complaint, Vince Patton of Oregon, wrote in the complaint that “NHTSA should ban any video in the front seat and any interactive content while the car is in motion. Creating a dangerous distraction for the driver is a criminal neglect. ”

The NHTSA investigation may lead to a requirement to read a recall for Tesla cars until the defect discovered in the latest software is corrected. Last month, Mercedes issued such a call to thousands of EQS vehicles in which a similar problem was discovered, which it said happened due to a mistake.
