During his stay, Mr. Carbonnier met with the Sectorial Vice President for Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jimenez, the Chancellor of the Republic, Yván Gil, representatives of different government ministries, civil society leaders, the Venezuelan Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to strengthen cooperation mechanisms for the benefit of communities affected by armed violence. In addition, Carbonnier visited the community of Cota 905 in Caracas to see first-hand the reality of its inhabitants.

“Although some improvements have been seen in the situation in the country, there are still areas where armed violence persists and its serious consequences continue to affect the population, causing them suffering and uncertainty,” Carbonnier said.

The ICRC vice-president stressed the importance of protecting the lives and dignity of the most vulnerable people, an exclusively humanitarian task that the organization carries out in a neutral, impartial and independent manner. He also reaffirmed that the ICRC will continue to work with communities to strengthen their resilience and thus better deal with situations such as difficulties in accessing basic services, displacement, lack of contact between family members, as well as loss of livelihoods, among others.

“In countries where there are situations of violence other than armed conflicts, the consequences for the population can be even worse. That is why it is very important for the ICRC to maintain cooperation with the communities, who are at the center of our action, as well as with the partners of the Movement to achieve a greater impact together”, he stressed.

In 2022, the ICRC’s humanitarian action benefited 250,000 people affected by armed violence in Venezuela, and in 2023, it reaffirms its commitment to continue working to support the most vulnerable people. The ICRC is present in Venezuela with its humanitarian work in the states of Miranda, Aragua, Zulia, Táchira, Bolívar, Apure and the Capital District.
