The health risks caused by climate change, loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution urgently need to be given more priority in scientific research. That message is central to a Thursday published report of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The institute has made an overview of important research questions that scientists “have to work with”.

The research area in which health and environmental issues come together is known as planetary health. The KNAW notes that this type of research is still “in its infancy”. Something needs to be done about this, says the prominent scientific club, because by the end of this century, due to climate change and other environmental problems, billions of people may face “serious health risks from heat, floods, food shortages, infectious diseases, migration and conflict”.
