Barack Obama on Netflix

For the second time, following the Oscar-winning American Factory (also streamed by Netflix), America’s most “star-born” president since JFK tackles what’s happening in the workplace and the disappearing middle class. This time he is not only a producer, but also a narrator and on camera presenter. Which is both the biggest advantage and the worst disadvantage, since his star largely overshadows the story he wants to tell, and all you’re left with at the end is how cool it would be if he came to your workplace and serving you the food you ordered at lunch, holding your trolley at the supermarket or coming down to your basement and sitting down to listen to the experimental music you make. And no, please, dear Greek political leaders, do not attempt to do something similar in the run-up to the elections.

A shame because Working: What We Do All Day – inspired by the book of the same name – has an extremely interesting concept that allows us, within a total of four episodes, to follow what happens to 12 workers of different classes, belonging to three industries, health (agency that sends nurses to homes), hospitality (luxury hotel) and technology (self-driving truck start up). Starting from those at the bottom of the pyramid, such as the maid in a hotel in New York, and ending up as the boss, a philanthropic Indian tycoon. The choice is obviously not accidental, since all three companies represent industries that came and replaced industrial production. Apparently Obama is also trying to get his message across about how unions, when done right, can make a huge difference in the lives of workers. For those, on the other hand, who prefer something with an equally high star power index, even though the end result is mediocre and expected, then, again on Netflix, Arnold Schwarzenegger – former governor of California – awaits you in “wannabe True Lies” FUBAR as a father who discovers that his daughter works for the same “agency” (CIA) as him.
